OIST Alumni Share Global Career Journeys in Inspiring “Science in Focus” Webinar

The OIST Foundation recently hosted a highly engaging and successful installment of its “OIST Science in Focus” webinar series, spotlighting the remarkable career journeys of two early Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University alumni: Dr. Ankur Dhar of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Collin Stecker of Toyota Motor North America. Moderated by OIST Foundation Executive Director Ginger Choy, the webinar drew enthusiastic participation from students, alumni, faculty, and supporters from around the world. The conversation explored how OIST’s uniquely interdisciplinary and international environment helped shape the alumni’s paths into advanced scientific research, sustainability policy, science communication, and global industry leadership.

Throughout the webinar, both speakers reflected on the close-knit and pioneering spirit of OIST’s early years, emphasizing the lasting impact of collaboration, outreach, and cross-cultural community-building during their time on campus. Participants asked thoughtful questions about research, policy, career transitions, and the global recognition of the OIST experience, resulting in a lively and inspiring exchange. The event also highlighted the growing strength of the OIST alumni network and reinforced the Foundation’s mission to increase awareness and support for OIST worldwide. Attendees were encouraged to stay engaged through future “Science in Focus” webinars, alumni activities, and the expanding OIST Foundation community.
