OIST Foundation Welcomes Japan’s Ambassador to the United States at Special Washington, D.C. Reception

The OIST Foundation was honored to host Japan’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Shigeo Yamada, at a special evening reception held on November 19 at the Trans-Pacific Future Center in Washington, D.C. The reception highlighted the shared vision between the Center and the Foundation: to create a dynamic platform where rising leaders can engage on public policy, innovation, and U.S.–Japan—and broader Trans-Pacific—collaboration. This mission aligns with the OIST Foundation’s commitment to fostering global scientific partnerships and strengthening the ties between the U.S. and Japan through education, research, and innovation.

The distinguished gathering included Guest of Honor, OIST President Karin Markides, as well as Dr. Rita Colwell, member of the OIST Board of Governors, alongside key Foundation leaders. The accompanying photograph features Ambassador Yamada with OIST Foundation Chairman Takeshi Ueshima and Trustees Dr. Hiroyuki Fujita, Chip Gregson, and Dr. Yuko Kakazu, together with Executive Director Ginger Choy.

Guests enjoyed an evening that blended diplomacy, science, and culture. A special Okinawa Awamori cocktail, crafted by beverage specialist Louie Anne Batac-Nguyen, offered attendees a taste of Okinawa’s distinctive hospitality. The program also featured a stirring performance by Sanshin artist Kyoko Asato—born in Tomigusuku City, Okinawa, known for her classical Okinawan music and active role with Okinawa Kai in Washington, D.C.
The OIST Foundation was deeply privileged to welcome Ambassador Yamada and looks forward to continuing to build bridges that support scientific excellence, cultural understanding, and a brighter future across the Pacific.
